Cherry Basket

Kentucky State Highway 36,

Bath County

Near the Cherry Basket quilt pattern is a historic landmark, The Bourbon Iron Works Furnace.  This furnace was built by Jacob Myers from Richmond Virginia in 1782.  This was the first furnace built in Kentucky.  Mr. Myers supplied the U.S. Navy with cannon balls and grape shot.  This furnace aided in the U.S. victory of New Orleans in 1815.
There are many local tales that deal with the slate furnace.  One is that there is a tunnel that runs from the furnace to the Owings Col. Thomas Deye House.  This tunnel was used to take cannon balls into the city to protect the family and its possessions.  This tunnel has yet to be found so the question arises is there really a tunnel and if so where else does it go.
